Game Rules Reference
A comprehensive reference for all game rules. For a gentler introduction, see How to Play.
Objective
Be the first to reach 10 victory points by building settlements, cities, and collecting special achievements. The default target is 10 VP but can be configured from 9 to 13 in custom games.
Setup
The board is randomly generated with hexagonal terrain tiles, each assigned a number token (2–12, except 7). Players take turns placing initial settlements and roads in a snake draft order:
- Player 1 places a settlement and a road
- Player 2 places a settlement and a road
- Player 3 places a settlement and a road
- Player 3 places a second settlement and road (and collects starting resources)
- Player 2 places a second settlement and road (and collects starting resources)
- Player 1 places a second settlement and road (and collects starting resources)
Starting resources are collected from the hexes adjacent to your second settlement.
Turn Structure
Each turn follows this sequence:
- Roll Dice — Roll two dice. All players with settlements or cities on the matching number collect resources.
- Handle Robber (if 7) — Players with more than 7 cards discard half. Active player moves the robber and steals.
- Trade (optional) — Negotiate trades with other players or use bank/port trading.
- Build (optional) — Spend resources to build roads, settlements, cities, or buy development cards.
- End Turn — Pass to the next player.
