Building Guide

Building is how you expand your territory, increase your resource income, and earn victory points.

Roads

Cost: 1 Wood + 1 Brick

Roads are placed along the edges of hex tiles. They must connect to one of your existing roads, settlements, or cities. Roads are essential for expanding your network and reaching new settlement locations.

Longest Road

The player with the longest continuous chain of connected roads (at least 5) earns the Longest Road bonus — worth 2 victory points. If another player builds a longer chain, the bonus transfers to them. Note: the road must be a continuous path with no branches counting.

Settlements

Cost: 1 Wood + 1 Brick + 1 Wheat + 1 Sheep

Worth 1 Victory Point

Settlements are placed at intersections (corners) of hex tiles. When a number is rolled that matches an adjacent hex, you collect 1 of that hex's resource.

Placement Rules

  • Must be connected to one of your roads
  • Must be at least 2 road segments away from any other settlement or city (the "distance rule")
  • Maximum of 5 settlements per player (but you can upgrade them to cities)

Cities

Cost: 3 Ore + 2 Wheat

Worth 2 Victory Points

Cities replace an existing settlement. They collect 2 resources from each adjacent hex (instead of 1). This effectively doubles your income from those hexes. Cities are worth 2 VP, so upgrading a settlement gains you 1 additional VP.

Strategy tip: Cities on high-probability numbers (6, 8, 5, 9) are extremely valuable since they'll produce resources more often.

Development Cards

Cost: 1 Ore + 1 Wheat + 1 Sheep

Development cards are drawn randomly from the deck. You can play one per turn (not the same turn you buy it). See the Development Cards guide for details on each type.
