Competitive and direct
Focuses on blocking the leader at every opportunity. Only makes trades when clearly advantageous. Uses the robber strategically against the biggest threats. Pushes for victory aggressively, even at the cost of diplomacy.

Deceptive
Strategic misdirection

SettleUp offers two AI engines. The Standard AI engine powers all four difficulty levels and is completely free. The optional LLM Enhanced AI upgrade uses large language models for even more human-like play.

Premium Plus subscribers can choose their preferred AI model for each player and even mix different models in the same game for unique matchups.
How the AI Works
Unlike traditional board game AI that follows simple decision trees, SettleUp's AI uses real language models (LLMs) to analyze the board, evaluate trade offers, and make strategic decisions. The AI system has two layers:
- Strategic Thread — Plans long-term strategy every few turns, considering overall board position, opponent threats, and resource goals
- Tactical Thread — Makes real-time decisions each turn, choosing what to build, where to place the robber, and how to respond to trade offers
This dual-layer system means the AI can both plan ahead and respond to immediate situations, making it a challenging and engaging opponent at every level.
In-Game AI Chat
AI opponents don't just play — they talk. During the game, each AI sends personality-driven chat messages that react to what's happening on the board.
